This is definitely a braggy post…just in case you want to get out now…but I hope you won’t because my son is so worth reading about.
This boy…messy, funny, smart, adorable, lazy and just a bit stubborn (I am saying “just a bit” to be nice about it).
When he was 5, starting kindergarten, we signed him up for karate lessons. We had already tried soccer, but watching him run behind the pack, looking anywhere but where the ball or the play actually was (not exactly picking daisies but pretty close), we knew that team sports was not really his thing. Karate seemed perfect.
Over the years, we were sure he would quit. He would complain, not want to go to class, not try hard when he got there. Honestly, we were just trying to keep him busy and active but we were definitely open to changing sports if that was what he wanted. BUT every year, when it was time to renew his membership, we told him he could quit and do something else if he wanted….
He always decided to keep going…because, he told us, “I am going to get my black belt by the time I am 16”
Don’t worry, we only said that in our heads.
By the time he was 14, he got very serious about his training, and getting his black belt was definitely looking more and more like a real possibility.
Colour us shocked.
After a lot of hard work, he did achieve his junior black belt at 15, and his full black belt at 16.
And from 14 on, we talked about recreating a special photo session we did in the studio when he was first starting karate, and was just an itty bitty white belt at age 5. But this time, with a real life black belt…the one he earned.
These images are the result of that recreation.
I find these two very cute…apparently they are totally made up poses. He refused to recreate these (and several others) because they were not authentic. Not even for his mom. Sigh.
SO fierce…ly cute! He also refused to recreate this one. I am thinking all I need to do is snap a photo of his face when I remind him to clean up after himself.
I’m still the mom…I needed a smile too.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS IN MID NOVEMBER 2014, you should know…he and I are are not in the country. We are in Brazil for an international karate tournament.
PEOPLE…I am IN.BRAZIL.WITH.MY.SON.
Mom and son adventure! I can assure you, photos will follow!
